[IA x SC] Seaming
Index Archive and Sonic Cinema present a programme exploring cloth, thread, and pattern through moving image and performance.
Centring on films working with everyday textiles of domesticity, this selection has a preoccupation with the small gauge, the minor gesture. Mass-produced materials including linen, lace, yarn, and Letratone are used as formal tools for thinking about cinema.
We’re used to treating the screen as a portal in traditional cinema. Here it’s a surface. The latent textile history of the projection screen is drawn out and examined, textiles becoming tactile layers, multiplying and dividing the screen space and viewing space. Folding, stitching, cutting, and printing, the gesture of craft runs throughout the programme, a seam that connects disparate approaches. Cloth becomes screen, film strip, and finally sound.
The evening concludes with a specially commissioned performance by Ilana Blumberg and Kenichi Iwasa, bringing together Blumberg’s practice as a knitwear designer and Iwasa’s work as an improvising musician.
Programmed by Sana Nawaz and Oliver Dickens.
